Structure · plain English
ETF is the search term.
ETN is the legal clue.
People often say “Bitcoin ETF” to mean any stock-market product that tracks Bitcoin. In the UK, the qualifying retail crypto products are exchange-traded notes. That distinction changes the risk analysis.
“Physically backed” needs unpacking
It usually means the product arranges holdings of the underlying crypto rather than using only a derivative. It does not mean you personally own identifiable coins or can withdraw them to a wallet.
Read who owns the collateral, who the custodian is, how much is held in cold storage and what the security holder can claim if an issuer or service provider fails.
Listed does not mean low risk
Official listing and admission to a recognised exchange create conditions around the security and venue. They do not make the underlying crypto stable or guarantee a buyer at the price you expect.
Crypto ETNs remain Restricted Mass Market Investments. Retail access is permission to offer a product—not a regulator’s recommendation to buy it.
The useful shortcut
Ask for the prospectus, ISIN and exact trading line.
A marketing name can cover several currency lines or share classes. The ISIN identifies the security; the ticker identifies a trading line. Use both when checking fees, wrapper eligibility and broker availability.
